Workers in Song

A History of Rock & Roll: 1955 - 1980

Those were the reasons and that was New York,
we were running for the money and the flesh.
And that was called love for the workers in song
probably still is for those of them left.
-- Leonard Cohen, Chelsea Hotel No. 2

On this page is a list of assigned songs for the Workers in Song Interim Project. Several of them are on the CDs that you have purchased for the course. On this page you will find links to others that we have set up on the Wofford Intranet. You can listen to the Intranet-based recordings on any computer connected to the campus network (a Real Audio player is required). This includes the computers in Milliken 316 (which have speakers), in the Technology/Writing Center on the 3rd floor of the library, and in the Olin computer lab. There are external speakers in the library, but please bring your own earphones. There are no external speakers on the computers in the Olin computer lab. If you listen to recordings there, it would be best to bring your own earphones - the type with a small jack that plugs into a portable CD player. You also can check earphones out from the front desk.

The recordings in the play list are categorized by lesson. You should have your lesson handouts when you listen to the recordings. The handouts contain discussions of the music and questions you should answer in preparation for the next day's quiz. You should know the assigned music well enough to answer questions related to those on the handouts. You should be able to identify an artist or group from portions of either the assigned recordings or other recordings with the same sound. You also should be able to recognize characteristic songs as being from a particular genre of music.

One of the themes of this course is that most, if not all, of today's music has its roots in the rock recorded between 1955 and 1980. These roots may be due to influence, inspiration, or a breakthrough made by an earlier artist/group. The class will be divided into groups of three or four students who should discuss among themselves more recent artists/groups of their choice from the last twenty years. From these discussions, each student will be responsible for making one afternoon presentation to the class about a particular artist/group. These presentations should include particular recordings that illustrate these roots. A few recordings (shown in red) from the 1980s and 1990s have been included in the assigned listening as suggestions. These suggestions are by no means exhaustive, or possibly even pertinent. They are just recordings that have occurred to me at one time or another as having connections with older music. When the groups are thinking about modern artists and their influences, the groups may find it useful to consult the World Wide Web. I have found the All Music Guide Web site to be particularly useful. It also may be helpful to use WWW search engines such as HotBot or Northern Light.

I would like to thank Jim Elmborg and Adam Lamkin for formatting the recordings and making it possible to distribute the files securely over our Intranet. This part of the Interim project is an outgrowth of the 1999 Web Expert Workshop supported by the Furman and Wofford Joint Andrew W. Mellon Project in Information Technology.
