About Dr. Talmage Skinner
Dr. Talmage Boyd Skinner, Jr. is a native of Anderson, South Carolina and a proud member of the Wofford College Class of 1956. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History, he attended the Candler School of Theology at Emory University, earning his Master of Divinity degree in 1960. Skinner would later return to Emory to earn the Master of Christian Education degree and earn the Doctor of Ministry Degree at Erskine Theological Seminary.
Skinner was ordained a Deacon of the United Methodist Church in 1958 and was ordained Elder in 1960. Dr. Skinner was a pastor as a member of the Holston Conference of Eastern Tennessee from 1960-1968 before he returned to Spartanburg to serve as the chaplain of Spartanburg Methodist College from 1968-1978. Skinner joined the South Carolina Conference in 1978 and was appointed to United Methodist Churches in Easley, Piedmont, Union and Ninety Six, SC.
In 1986, Skinner became Wofford's first full-time campus minister and chaplain and in 1997 he was named the first Perkins-Prothro Chaplain and Professor of Religion. This endowed chair was established by Joe and Louis Perkins, the Perkins-Prothro Foundation, and the Prothro family of Wichita Falls, TX. He retired from the college in 2003.
Skinner has been active in organizing reunions for Moyer's Men, a group of Wofford alumni who sang in the Wofford Glee Club directed by Professor Sam Moyer between 1947 and 1963. Dr. Skinner received awards for his service to Spartanburg Methodist College and has received numerous awards from various organizations on Wofford's campus.
Dr. Skinner is married to the former Beverly Keadle and has one daughter, Valerie Skinner Hendricks, (Wofford Class of 1990). Valerie and her husband Artie Henricks (Wofford Class of 1990), have two children, Smith Appleby Hendricks and Talmage Kirkwood Hendricks (T. K.) The Skinners have moved to Raleigh, NC to be near their family.
