An introductory survey of Western art and its major monuments, artists, techniques, styles, and themes. This course encompasses the art of the last 600 years, from the beginnings of the Renaissance to the twentieth century.
Goals of the course:
To help you to acquire a familiarity with the major monuments in the history of art
and a useful knowledge of names, dates, and places related to the art works
studied.
To develop an understanding of the language of art criticism and an ability to use that language accurately to describe, analyze, and interpret works of art.
To cultivate an awareness of some of the historical factors--pofitical events and structures, dominant ideologies, patterns of patronage, functional considerations-that have influenced the creation of works of art.
To foster your ability to express ideas about art with greater clarity in both verbal and written form.
To cultivate open-mindedness and appreciation, along with the critical skills of discrimination and discernment.

Requirements and Grade Distribution:
Midterm exams (3) - 20% each Final exam -25% Preparation for and participation in class discussion - 5% Essay on fieldtrip - 10%
Attendance Policy: Regular
attendance is expected of all students. Missed
exams may not be made up without written and verifiable proof of a medical,
family, or comparable emergency.

Mondays and Wednesdays, 1:00-2:30, or at other times by appointment, in Daniel
