Course Description:

This is a lecture-discussion course (with laboratory exercises for Bio446 students) based in the study of the structure and function of the nervous system from molecular to cognitive levels with emphasis on the experimental foundation of modern principles.

Goals:

1) To understand the molecular and cellular components of the nervous system
2) To understand how the formation of neuronal circuits allows an organism to gather information from the environment and execute appropriate responses to that input
3) To introduce and investigate the complex neural functions of higher order mammalian neural processes

Assessment:

Exams 1 and 2 will be used to assess goals 1 and 2-3, respectively. The research paper and comprehensive final exam will assess how well the student can integrate across these 3 goals. A grade of C- or better will be considered an indication that each goal has been met.

Syllabus

Powerpoint and Audio Files of Lectures : Lecture slides will be filed by date and corresponding text chapter after the lecture has taken place. For example: 9-13Ch2.ppt contains the slides for the lecture on Sept. 13th about Ch.2. Audio ( .mP3) files will be listed by date. These are password protected files thus, you will be asked to enter your Wofford username, password, and domain (Wofford).

I recommend reviewing the slides on a computer screen so that you can view the animations from start to finish.

If you are using the computer center or the library computers, please print Power Point slides as HANDOUTS with 4 slides per page in black and white. Be patient, the printer must process many requests at the same time. When printing from your own computer, you may chose to print out 1-2 slides/ page if desired.
