Four sample "simile" poems written by 5th graders from Chapmen Elementary School. The children wrote the poems on October 11, 2001 while sitting next to the waterfall at White's Mill along the Lawson's Fork, Spartanburg, SC.

The waterfall is like a child crying over a piece of candy.

The smell is like a clear summer day when the wind blows.

When the water hits the rocks it goes splash, splash, kapow.

It sounds like milk splashing down in the cheerio bowl.

The water looks like tears.

My eyes look like round spheres.

The trees look like giant monsters.

I wish in earth there were Ghost Busters.

The sand looks like salt and the big rocks look like heads that were bald.

The waterfall is like a bath tub full of water.

The sand is like sticky candy

The mosquitos are like my sister and brother.

The leaves* are like a mermaids hair.

The bugs are like monsters.

[*from an overhanging mimosa tree]

Rocks remind me of turtles that are sleeping.

Pebbles remind me of milk duds.

The big rocks are like mountains.

The waterfall is like a big mixer.

The creek itself is like a big nature bath that soothes everything.
