The Chattooga River!

"Our trip to the Chattooga was the most fun day of all for me. We all expected a day of rafting excitment and we were not disappointed. However... a good deal of learning took place. Dr. Ferguson's geology lectures about deposition, erosion and transportation have been the most long lasting in my mind. It is possible to have a good time and learn something new." (excerpt from Wofford freshman Thomas Pierce's final exam).

Yes, we did have a lot of fun. And our shared experience further strengthened the bonds among the members of the learning community. We also became "River People" for a day and experienced, first hand, a taste of the wildness that author Rick Bass described.
.... At three different stops along the river, Wofford professor Dr. Terry Ferguson taught us about the geology of the river and the surrounding area.

Making connections was one of the on-going themes of the learning community. Here Wofford graduate, guide, and manager of the Chattooga Nantahala Outdoor Center, Dave Perrin, meets up with former mentor, retired Wofford Psychology professor, and white-water enthusiast, John Pilley. The freshman heard many stories from these two!   Note the location of our guide as we head into some of the river's most powerful rapids! We were blissfully ignorant of our plight and quickly reunited with our guide at the next pool.
