Portrait Studio
last updated 20 January 2002 at 1:40 pm
Our portrait studio consists of a 4 head Novatron Varipower 440 watt-second
lighting system with a backdrop stand, a gray muslim 10x12 backdrop and a 7x5
hand painted brown canvas. A Shepard incident flash meter and PC cables and
adaptors and a tripod are also provided.
Studio photographers are expected to consult books, reference materials, manuals,
and any other sources prior to their studio time slots so that they will have
some ideas to implement during their "shoot." Students are free to
re-arrange the equipment to suit their needs, but are to leave the studio neat,
clean, and orderly upon their departure. Students are expected to cooperate
in pairs and adhere to the schedule.
The purposes of having students use the studio are
-
to understand the use of studio lighting to generate photographs under
carefully controlled lighting
-
to experiment with various lighting systems to appreciate the effect that
even subtle changes can have on portrait photography
-
to gain confidence working with studio lighting equipment
-
to fully appreciate the difficulties of achieving well-made portraits
-
to consider poses and lighting setups that are most flattering for portraiture
-
to become familiar with the use of an incident flash meter
