From Gordon Lay

Mr. Bonner explained news photographers face many dangers such as: they are often close to the scene of a crime placing them in harms way. There are cases where news photographers have been shot at, threatened to be arrested by police, and have been placed in jail for angering a judge in court. As put by Mr. Bonner, “people are crazy these days.”

The switch to digital cameras at his newspaper occurred almost overnight according to Mr. Bonner. Mainly due to the ease of processing film and the amount of time saved.

You do not have to study photography in college to become a professional photographer as Mr. Bonner is evidence. News photographers have long hours and in reality are always on call. He gave examples of having to go to car wrecks or fires at 3 or later in the morning.

With the shift in technology photographers do not have to be back as early to develop their film. It is even possible to use a cell phone and send your images back to the paper without ever returning in person. With this technology photographers can stay and shoot longer at late night events not having to worry about development time.

News photography is not as glamorous of a job as it might seem. He spoke of having to sleep in a car during the Susan Smith trial.

You do not have to have a huge ego even if you shoot the cover of Time.

Also not everyone is lucky enough to get a job they love going to everyday.

Photographers cannot just go out and take pictures of little kids like they once could. Permission should be asked for and is sometimes denied. However, years ago you could go and take pictures of little kids and no one would think anything of it, times have changed.(Nothing much they can say either)

Technology is changing everyday and he believes that in a few years news photographers will no longer be using cameras, but will be using video cameras instead. As proof Herald~Journal is presently trying to get their photographers to shoot with both digital cameras and video cameras.

One card of digital film is equivalent to about four roles of regular film, giving the opportunity to shoot more without having to stop and change roles of film.

From Jennifer Vaughn (submitted 21 January 2002, 4 days late)

1. Previsualized shots cannot be relied upon when shooting at the scene of action.

2. Permission is required by guardians of children who are bing photgraphed for public use.

3. Photography is still changing and improving everday.

4. Most newspapers today are using all digital equipment.

5. Most creativety and imaginative images are lost due to required images the newspaper expects from their photographers.

6. Features are photgrpahs taken for competition and for features in the newspaper.

7. Their film discs are stored on compact discs to keep on file for future use of the same images.

8. Lab tops are used to choose images to print and are easy to carry, making them practical to use on-site where they soot pictures.

9. Advances in photography makes it easier to reach deadlines and take more images without the waste of film and money.

10. Clarity is lost in the images taken from digital cameras, verses the 50mm cameras.
