Determining the Chemical Formula of a Copper Chloride Hydrate
The chemical formula of a copper chloride hydrate was determined by measuring the masses of the separated components of water and copper. The chloride mass was determined by difference. The mole ratio of water was determined by dehydrating the compound using gentle heating. The copper in the compound was collected from a reduction reaction with aluminum. The chemical formula was determined to be CuCl2·2H2O.
