Here is a continuously updated list of the long term projects we have been working on. The issues listed here are some of the most important environmental issues effecting the State, College, and Planet. This page was created to help future students know the basics of what is happening, and what others have done before.

Proposed Pee Dee Generating Staion

There is a new coal fired power plant that is set to be built in Pamplico County, SC. View Map This plant would singlehandly increase the CO2 output of South Carolina by 20%! Also the plant will emit over 65 differnt "Hazardous Air Pollutants" (Pollutants that are known or suspected to cause serious health effects) at a rate of 20 lbs per hour! This is compleatly unacceptable, and ts page will help detail how to stop it!

First check out the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control's website SC DHEC. This is the Beureau of Air Quality division, it is their job to regulate polluters, and so it is their job to aprove The Pee Dee Plant's in order for it to be built. Now to further your understanding of what is going on, check out the Fact Sheet on DHEC's website. One item to note is that the approval process is based soley on wheather the plant will emit pollutants that exceede State and Federal laws. So the question is raised what can we do to prevent this plant from being built? Good luck to you!

Allies

There are many groups opposing this plant. The Costal Conservation Leauge is spearheading the effort to stop the plant. For more information on the status of the Pee Dee Creek plant email Nancy Cave at nancyc -at- scccl.org

The Presidents Climate Commitment

The Presidents Climate Commitment is a pledge made by College and University presidents that recognizes the seriousness of climate change, and the role that higher education should play in shaping a future that uses less carbon. It is summed up succiently in the second paragraph of the pledge

We believe colleges and universities must exercise leadership in their communities and throughout society by modeling ways to minimize global warming emissions, and by providing the knowledge and the educated graduates to achieve climate neutrality.

The pledge was signed by President Dunlap in the Fall of 2007. Currently (Fall 2008) a committe of students, professors, the facilities managers, and environemtnal experts to determine the best way Wofford can fulfill it's pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emmissions. The pledge specifies three broad goals that each signatory commites to
  1. Initiate the development of a comprehensive plan to achieve climate neutrality as soon as possible.
  2. Make real short term changes to reduce greenhouse gas emmissions while the more comprehensive plan is being developed.
  3. Make the action plan, inventory, and periodic progress reports publicly available by providing them to the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) for posting and dissemination.
For more information, and to read the pledge itself, please see the Presidents Climate Commitment's Website

Local Food

Local food is one easy way you can truly encourage a more sustainable future. Local farmers typically use far less oil, pesicides, and produce less waste than a traditional corporate farm. By buying from a local farmer your money goes straight to the producer, as opposed to buying from a grocery store where only a small percentage of what you pay goes to those who own the buisness. The benefits of buying local are almost innumerable, check out this handy chart to see how. Real Food Wheel. Check out the Real Food Challenge website for more deatils. Real Food Challenge
We here at Wofford have been working with our food service people to try and get more local, fair trade, and organic served on campus. Everyone we have talked to have been more than happy with the idea, the biggest hurdle is implementation, and getting student on board with the idea. If you would like to find out more try contacting these people in food services, just type their names into the Wofford Directory to find out how to get in touch:
